I applied for the role that replaced me.

There I was, applying for the very role that replaced me. Spoiler alert—I didn't get it. But what I did gain was far more valuable than a new title.

When my role was “eliminated,” it was a gut punch. To see it swiftly replaced by a new position—higher in both rank and pay—was another. But I chose to take a leap of faith and apply anyway, leaning into my own growth and resilience. And while I didn't land the role, the journey was filled with lessons that reaffirmed the power of vulnerability, courage, and continuous learning.

Here are the lessons that helped me redefine my path forward:

  1. Embracing Change with Grace and Optimism: Getting let go wasn’t easy. But as a leader, I’ve learned that change often creates the most unexpected opportunities. I chose to see this experience as a catalyst for transformation—a launchpad for the next chapter, rather than a setback.

  2. Choosing Courage Over Comfort: Applying for the new role was a bold move, and it reminded me that real growth happens when we step outside of our comfort zones. As leaders, our willingness to risk rejection is a testament to our resilience and our commitment to evolving.

  3. Redefining Rejection: Yes, not landing the job was tough. But every rejection is an invitation to reflect and grow. It’s a chance to understand where we can do better, what we can improve, and to reaffirm our commitment to our goals.

  4. Reaffirming Self-Worth: This process was a moment of reckoning with my own value. Taking a hard look at my experience, the skills I bring to the table, and my professional worth was an empowering exercise. It’s a reminder that knowing what we deserve is the first step toward achieving it.

  5. The Power of Reflection: As I’ve reflected on this experience, I’ve gained a clearer vision of my career aspirations and where I want to direct my energy. Every challenge shapes our journey, but it’s how we respond to these moments that define us.

  6. Looking Forward with Purpose: Now, I move forward with renewed clarity and excitement. There’s a world of opportunities waiting to be explored, and I’m stepping into it with the confidence of a leader who knows that growth is always possible.

This journey wasn't without its awkward moments and hits to the ego. But in sharing this story, I hope to inspire those who might be walking a similar path. Because at the end of the day, our careers aren’t defined by one role or one rejection—they’re defined by our capacity to adapt, to learn, and to lead with resilience.

Here’s to embracing every challenge as an opportunity to grow. To all the leaders out there, let’s keep pushing the boundaries of what’s possible.
